September 2018 SporkNews

If you are new to WeatherSpork, welcome to the family!  This e-Newsletter will be emailed out at the beginning of each month to keep you updated on the new features and content provided by WeatherSpork.  We hope the app has made your preflight weather analysis much easier and has saved you time to find that perfect time that minimizes your exposure to adverse weather.

The month of September had only one minor release (version 4.4.3) containing mostly bug fixes.  Over the last two months we have been working to implement a major update to some support software used by the WeatherSpork app.  We are in the process of testing that right now and this will allow us to support many other devices including the new iPhones as well as the ability to rotate small devices to the landscape mode.

Are you getting a network failure error?

Does the error message below look familiar?  If so, here’s what you can do in the interim.  This issue is being caused by a retrieval error in one of the NWS weather resources used in WeatherSpork.

Essentially, some airports in the database (such as KMWA in this case) are triggering  this problem.  Until this is fixed by the NWS, please take a minute to change WeatherSpork to use the alternate source.  Here are the steps.

If you get this error, click or tap on Cancel.  Then, visit the Spork Menu (hamburger symbol in the upper-left) and choose the Preferences view.  Under the preferences, click or tap on the Advanced settings.  You will see a setting for Weather API.  Tap on the right and change api.weather.gov to forecast.weather.gov.  This will solve the Network failure error.  The only difference you will see is that wind information will not be available in the 7-Day view.  Once the NWS has fixed this issue, we will send out a message letting you know that you can switch the setting back.  We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

The Spork Report posts & new YouTube videos

If you couldn’t attend any of the AOPA fly-ins to hear Scott’s presentation, check out this post in The Spork Report.  It’ll give you a summary of some of the new features in the SiriusXM satellite-delivered weather broadcast.  Also, you don’t want to miss our two new video series that captures the weather analysis for pilots flying to one of two different live workshops that I held in September.  Getting to Williamsport (Video 1, Video 2 and Video 3).  Getting to Houston (Video 1, Video 2 and Video 3).

Speaking schedule for 2018

Scott will be speaking at the remaining two AOPA fly-in events and the annual Cirrus Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) Migration.  If you are planning to attend any of the fly-in events, please stop by and say hello!  Here is a schedule of the remaining events.

WeatherSpork will also have a booth in the exhibition hall at the COPA Migration event.  If you are attending, please take a minute to stop by and chat with the WeatherSpork team.  If you stop by, please ask about our show special.  You’ll get a discount to extend your membership for another year.  Lastly, Scott will be available on Friday and/or Saturday in the booth to go over the weather for your departure on Sunday.

Want WeatherSpork to be FREE?

It’s easy…give us a referral.  We’ve gotten several dozen new members through the WeatherSpork referral program we launched in May.  A big thanks to those who are spreading the word!  Essentially if you refer a new member and they register and pay for an annual membership, we will add an extra month to your current subscription.  Alternatively, you can donate your free month to the member you are referring…it’s your choice, so let us know.  Refer one new member each month and you’ll never have to pay for a WeatherSpork subscription.  We know the WeatherSpork app is a revolutionary new tool that will help pilots plan safe flights very efficiently with the patent pending Wheel Up Departure Advisor .  So spread the word and keep the Spork-speak going!
